Thanksgiving is only a week away. It is time for you to serve up a delicious dinner for your family, including your pet. Yes, Thanksgiving is a holiday about sharing with loved ones but it is unhealthy to share your Thanksgiving meal leftovers with your pet. You will need to personalize your pet’s Thanksgiving Meal to ensure your pet’s safety during the holiday.
Around this time of year, Veterinarians experience an increase in pets coming in for digestive problems because pets are served high fat meals of ham, turkeys, chocolates and bones from Thanksgiving Dinner.
Although your pet may appreciate the generosity, food items such as turkey bones can be life threatening to your pet. Turkey bones are hollow and the bones can easily break into sharp pieces to cause blockage and perforation in your pet’s intestinal tract. Some symptoms that come with turkey bones lodged in the digestive tract are loss of appetite, depression, vomiting and diarrhea. Leftover turkey can also put your pet at high risk of suffering from salmonella (which lives in the turkey intestinal tract) food poisoning.
Here are other food items you should avoid feeding your pet:
Sage. Yes, sage makes for splendid Thanksgiving Stuffing but the herb contains essential oils and resins that cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression for pets. Cats are extremely sensitive to the effects of sage.
Never feed your dog raw bread dough. Your pet can potentially suffer from vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating from the raw dough because your pet’s body temperature could cause the bread dough to rise in the stomach. If this happens, your pet could be put in a life-threatening situation.
Don’t let your dog overindulge on food. During the holidays, your pet needs to maintain a regular healthy diet to remain in good health. The last thing you want for the holidays is a pet suffering from an upset stomach, diarrhea or worse.
To ensure your pet is safe during Thanksgiving dinner, place your pet in a quiet area of the home until your guests leave and serve your pet his or her very own Thanksgiving feast. Also, inform guests that they should not slip any table scraps to your pet and explain its for the safety and health of your pet.
