Do you have to give your cat medications at home? It’s important that you know how to safely give your cat medications and the right dosage of medications.
My Pet Store And More is here to provide you great tips on how to administrate medications to your cat.
Often cat owners mistakenly try to give their cats medication (pills, capsules and powders) during meal times by inserting the medicines in cat food.
This is not always the best action because your cat could accidentally remove the medicines from the cat food without receiving the proper dosage.
If you want to administer medicines during meal times, you should consider the following products:
-
Pill Pockets (perfect for hiding tablets and liquid medication).
-
Pill Crusher (perfect for pets that have trouble swallowing pills).
-
Quick & Easy Pill Dispenser (perfect for administering oral medications, especially ones where controlled dosage are mandatory).
With these products, you can prevent anxiety about the giving of medications for both of you.
What do you do when you are required to give medicines directly to your cat?
If you’re nervous about how your cat will react when directly taking medicines, we recommend wrapping your beloved cat in a towel (similar to wrapping a baby in a blanket).
Next, put your thumb and forefinger on one side of your cat’s face to help your cat willingly open his or her mouth.
When your cat opens his or her mouth put the medicine at the back of the tongue. Let your cat close his/her mouth.
Once the mouth is shut, gently rub the throat of your cat to help him/her swallow the medicines.
After the medicines are taken, provide your cat 1 teaspoon (5ml) or more of water through a syringe.
Why is it important to provide water to your cat during the taking of medications?
It is important to provide water to your cat to prevent medicine, such as pills, from lingering in the esophagus.
If medicines remain in the tissues of the esophagus, your cat could experience vomiting or damage to the ulcers.
You may also use syringes or eyedroppers to administrate liquid medications.
As for giving your cat injections, make sure that injections are given around the same time of day, every day. It is recommended to serve cat food to your pet to help him/her associate injection time with the pleasant experience of eating. Eating the cat food will distract your cat while you administrate the medicine.
